Classic American Eats

In the good old US of A, summer is a time for celebration. The sun is shining, school is out, long-distance vacations are happening, and kids are shooting through growth spurts. For most Americans, however, summer is all about the grill and finger-friendly tasty foods. The culinary options are endless—especially around the Fourth of July.

You know the drill. We’ve all done it since we could toddle around in diapers and chase bubbles: The American Family Picnic. Mom spends days making lists and shopping, prepping, and cooking. Beef, pork, chicken, and seafood get purchased in quantity and set to marinate in spice rubs and sauces. Fruits are chosen to be seeded, peeled, and macerated. Pasta is boiled. Potatoes are peeled. Vegetables get scrubbed. Recipes are at the ready. The big day comes and the guests arrive en masse. But you’ve got this.

It’s time to fire up the grill.

Every “grill master” will have their own preferences—propane, charcoal, fruit wood for smoking, chimney start or fluid starter—but when that dinner bell rings for a host of classic American eats, everyone will agree the end result is fantastic. Steaks, hamburgers, ribs, seafood, even a variety of vegetables all come off the grill, piping hot and ready to make your mouth water.

The goodness doesn’t stop there. The protein selections may be the stars of the picnic, but we can’t forget the supporting cast. Grab a couple of deviled eggs. Get yourself a scoop of macaroni salad, maybe some potato salad too. Don’t like savory salads? Perhaps some carrot-raisin or Watergate is more your speed. Bean salad, charro beans, barbecue baked beans … take your pick.

Picnic desserts are the best, and are usually in great abundance. Treats like apple pies and berry cobblers, Jell-O desserts, cookies and cakes will make your sweet tooth quite happy. Just don’t forget to save room for the homemade ice cream.

We know how important this holiday weekend can be as we celebrate all that makes us American, from freedom and family to the wide world of eclectic food and drink.
